【Close-Up Exhibition】 Recent Discoveries from Ancient Jordan: Japanese Contributions to Archaeological Research
6 February 2021 (Sat.) - 28 March 2021 (Sun.) 【Close-Up Exhibition】 Recent Discoveries from Ancient Jordan: Japanese Contributions to Archaeological Research
Ancient Jordan played an important role in the history of the ancient Near East. Despite its remoteness from the cradles of civilisations in Mesopotamia and Egypt, and its mostly arid landscape, it is known as "the good land on the other side of Jordan" River in the Old Testament. Yet the history of kingdoms such as Ammon, Moab, and Edom, all of which prospered in modern Jordanian territory, remain shrouded in mystery. Recent archaeological investigations have progressively uncovered its deep history reaching back to the prehistoric ages. Since the 1990’s, Japanese scholars have also contributed to understanding of the ancient history of Jordan, via research ranging from the Palaeolithic to the Byzantine periods.
This exhibition of panels and images presents to the public some of the new vistas and understanding of ancient Jordan based on Japanese archaeological work, and Jordanian-Japanese collaborative efforts on the cultural heritage of Petra.
